VBSD Update – 5/2/2012

Big update! It took about 3 weeks to get my order of boards shipped from China. I finished assembling my first prototype of Rev03. I verified that the microcontroller powers up and runs but I still have to probe the rest of the board searching for design issues. Things are starting to roll forward, though. Enjoy the pictures for now and post your questions/comments.

Looks great can’t wait to buy it. I just have one question Is $60 USD the price, or is it what it cost you.

    Just a couple of questions
    1. Did you get the prototype working yet
    2. Does it fit a normal VB cart size?

Thanks and good luck w your project I for one am very enthused :)

It does not and will not fit a regular VB cartridge. I don’t want to use donor carts from VB games. At the moment I’m not working on it because a family member had a stroke, so I’ve been busy.

Things are still coming along. Can’t give you an estimation for when it will be done. It all depends on my schedule and how much time I have to work on it. Right now I’m trying to find a replacement for my microcontroller because it is running out of memory. Also writing the FPGA code and debugging some board issues.

Ok thanks for your quick reply I guess I’ll hold off buying a flashboy for another year Oh and BTW I know that you don’t want to give out prices at this time but will the final product be around $100. USD?

lastly I should of added this on the last statement but oh well will it have an outer shell or will it be bear board? I’d much rather like it to have a shell but I know that will drive cost up if it does. Also if It doesn’t have a shell could you provide exact specs for someone else to make a shell before it is released so when it is released we could have it in a shell if we could fabricate one ourselves. Thanks again. and good luck w your awesome project I can’t wait to own one if it is affordable.:)

    Any updates at this time?

I haven’t worked on it for a few weeks because things have gotten really busy at work and I’m working long hours. Before that, I was debugging some issues with the FPGA board. I have the SD card functionality working so once I get the FPGA working it should hopefully be a quick jump to getting a game running. There won’t be a case for the board, or at least I haven’t thought that far yet. I can certainly release dimensions when the board is final. I don’t have a 3D printer or any manufacturing capabilities for a case at this time.

I would like one of these also! Thanks for making these!

I’m trying to get it done. Unfortunately it’s easy to get burnt out on something like this because there isn’t a lot of demand (despite a core following at planetVB, but I’m guessing I would only sell 100 or so) and I am not making these for profit. I have another project going that can potentially make me a lot of money so it’s tough to get the motivation to work on this. I haven’t forgotten about the planetVB community though.

Please DON’T GIVE UP the work that you are doing is momumental for the VB community. Your targeted price is very reasonable. You are a real hero to the community.Tell me it does’nt really matter but are you planning to etch the boards in red? I read a post about it earlier on PVB.
